Your site runs across at least two replicas in physically separate datacentres. If one fails or we're maintaining it, traffic shifts to another automatically, your visitors don't see it. Available on GreenStack Pro and above, with additional replicas and dedicated nodes available for higher-traffic platforms.

  • ✓ Multiple datacentres, automatic failover

  • ✓ Maintenance with no visible downtime

  • ✓ Pro and Scale tiers available

  • ✓ Add replicas or dedicated nodes as you grow

  • ✓ Built into the platform, not an add-on

Two layers of DDoS protection, Cloudflare's at the edge, your datacentre's behind it. WAF blocks attacks before they reach your application. The Cloudflare global CDN serves your content close to your visitors, reducing both load times and server load.

  • ✓ Cloudflare WAF blocking attacks at the edge

  • ✓ Two-layer DDoS protection (edge + datacentre)

  • ✓ Global CDN serving content close to visitors

  • ✓ Faster page loads, lower server load

  • ✓ Standard on every plan, no add-on tier

Support handled by Umbraco Certified Masters, not first-line ticket triage. Typical resolution time is twenty minutes. We monitor your services proactively and resolve issues before they reach your visitors. The same engineers who built the platform are the ones answering your tickets.

Powered by 100%
Renewable Energy

Every datacentre we use runs on 100% renewable energy - wind, solar, and hydropower, paired with energy-efficient hardware. We chose our partners specifically because of their renewable commitments, not despite them.

Beyond renewable infrastructure, we also offset carbon for every customer through our partnership with Ecologi. We commit 5% of every hosting fee to tree planting on your behalf - typically four or more trees per customer per month, at no additional cost to you.

Recognised in 2025 as Best Eco-Friendly Hosting & Development Provider at the SME News Awards, and runner-up for Green Business of the Year at the Petersfield Awards 2023.

GreenStack
FAQs

Got questions about GreenStack? We’ve got you covered. Here are answers to some common queries about our load balanced, secure, high-performance hosting and the features we include as standard.

No. We have taken care of the Docker side for you. All you need is our pre-configured Dockerfile and GitHub Actions workflow, both ready to use and documented in the knowledgebase.

From there you build and develop exactly as you would normally, with your own tools and workflow. No Docker experience is required, so your developers can stay focused on building the site.

If anything is unclear while setting up, our support team will walk you through it.

Pricing: Umbraco Cloud applies annual price rises. GreenStack pricing changes only when infrastructure costs require it, not on an automatic yearly schedule. Your costs are predictable for budgeting and procurement.

Specialism: Both Umbraco Cloud and GreenStack are run by Umbraco specialists. The difference is access - on GreenStack, Umbraco Certified Masters answer your tickets directly. No tiered triage.

Flexibility: Umbraco Cloud locks you into their deployment model and infrastructure choices. GreenStack supports any CI/CD provider, multiple Docker registries, and gives you control over your stack.

Sustainability: GreenStack runs on 100% renewable energy with carbon offsetting included. Umbraco Cloud doesn't publicly commit to renewable infrastructure.

Migration: Free with every paid plan. Our Certified Masters handle the technical detail.

Database Performance:

GreenStack gives you a dedicated Azure SQL database. Legacy hosting uses SQL Express shared with up to 200 other databases on the same server. The performance difference is significant.

Modern Infrastructure:

  • GreenStack: Ubuntu Linux with Docker containerization

  • Legacy: Windows Server with shared resources

Control Panel:

  • GreenStack: UmbPanel (our proprietary panel, actively developed)

  • Legacy: SolidCP (standard panel, maintenance mode)

Platform Development:

  • GreenStack: Our actively developed platform with continuous improvements

  • Legacy: Maintained for Umbraco v4-12 compatibility

For Umbraco 13+, GreenStack delivers better infrastructure and performance.

Legacy hosting is designed for older Umbraco versions (v4-12) that cannot run on containerized infrastructure.

GreenStack Core is less than our legacy UmbOne package with significantly better infrastructure.

GreenStack is built on Docker Swarm and Ubuntu Linux industry-standard technologies that power some of the world's largest websites.

Your developers don't need to know these technologies though. We've handled all the setup and configuration so you can focus on building great Umbraco sites.

GreenStack Core supports Umbraco 13 and above (13, 14, 15, 16, 17+).

GreenStack Pro and Scale support Umbraco 17 and above. This is because load-balanced backoffice support was introduced in Umbraco 17, which is essential for our multi-replica architecture.

Running Umbraco v4-12? Check out our Legacy Windows Hosting which supports all older Umbraco versions.

GreenStack supports the below registries:

  • DockerHub

  • Azure Container Registry

  • GitLab Container Registry

  • GitHub Container Registry

  • AWS ECR

  • ProGet

  • Quay

  • Self-managed container registries

Replicas are live copies of your site running side by side in different locations. If one runs into trouble, the others carry on serving visitors without anyone noticing.

On GreenStack Pro and above your site runs across at least two replicas in physically separate datacentres, which buys you quicker responses as well as automatic protection. Should a server drop out, traffic moves elsewhere instantly.

Expecting a busier spell? Additional replicas can be added to share the load.

Yes! GreenStack fully supports load balancing the Umbraco backoffice with Umbraco 17 and above.

This means your editors can work efficiently even when your site is under heavy load or experiencing high traffic. Multiple replicas handle both your public-facing site and the backoffice, ensuring a smooth editing experience regardless of what's happening on the front end.

Load-balanced backoffice is available on Pro packages and above.

Yes. Moving from Core to Pro is straightforward, and it switches on load balancing across multiple locations immediately.

Need more headroom or redundancy? Replicas beyond the standard two can be added for a small monthly fee each, which suits high-traffic sites and anywhere uptime genuinely matters.

Drop our support team a line and we will work out the right configuration with you.

Yes! You can purchase dedicated nodes in any of our datacentre regions, including the United Kingdom, for ultimate performance and control.

Dedicated nodes give you guaranteed resources that aren't shared with other customers, making them ideal for high-traffic sites or applications with specific performance requirements. They work seamlessly with GreenStack's load balancing—you can even combine dedicated and shared nodes in your configuration.

Contact our support team to discuss dedicated node options and pricing for your specific needs.

Yes! Mounts are persistent storage volumes that keep your data safe even when containers are updated or restarted. Unlike container storage which resets, mounted folders preserve your files permanently.

Need extra mounts for media libraries, uploaded files, or application data? Contact our support team and we'll configure them for your environment.

Yes. If the standard packages do not quite fit, talk to us about GreenStack Scale, our fully customisable enterprise option.

We will put a package together around what you actually need, whether that is a dedicated node in the UK, extra replicas, bespoke resource allocations or specialised configuration. Tell us the requirement and we will design the environment around it.

GreenStack shared hosting runs from our UK region, built on our own infrastructure in London, so your site and its dedicated Azure SQL database stay in the United Kingdom. Our EU region in Germany is available too if you would rather sit inside the EU.

Dedicated GreenStack nodes can be placed anywhere we operate, including the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Finland, Poland, Canada, Virginia, Oregon, Singapore and Sydney.

Absolutely! Free SSL certificates are included as standard with all packages, powered by Cloudflare's trusted certificate authority.

Your site gets automatic HTTPS with no configuration needed, we handle everything for you, including automatic renewals so your certificates never expire.

Core is single-server, designed for development environments, smaller production sites, and teams getting started:

  • 15GB storage

  • 1.5GB server memory

  • 2GB Basic Azure SQL database

  • 10 custom domains

Pro adds load-balancing across two physically separate datacentres, automatic failover, and a 99.9% uptime guarantee. Plus more resources:

  • 2 replicas across multiple datacentres

  • 30GB storage

  • 5GB server memory

  • 250GB S0 Azure SQL database

  • 20 custom domains

  • Uptime guarantee

  • Load-balanced infrastructure

Pro is the right choice for business-critical sites where downtime costs more than the upgrade does.

Yes. GreenStack Pro and Scale carry a 99.9% uptime guarantee, backed by load-balanced infrastructure spread across physically separate datacentres.

Core is the entry-level package, built for smaller sites and development environments, and does not carry the guarantee. If you need guaranteed availability and automatic failover, Pro or above is the right starting point.
